On Thursday, March 5, 2009, we took the Lake Hodges and Kit Carson Park Trip (San Diego Bird Festival). This was a good birding trip, and we got to see some interesting species, the California Gnatcatcher being one of them. The entire world's population of this species exists in Baja California and coastal southern California. It is a year-round resident and depends on a variety of arid scrub habitats. The California Gnatcatcher is limited to coastal sage scrub habitat in California and northern Baja but is more widespread in southern Baja. We saw this species in both California and Baja. It was a cool, partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the mid-60's.
